I wish I could say that a positive attitude is trainable, but it starts with a natural desire to help people.

The goal is to find people with such a desire, and eleminate those who demonstrate a lack of desire.

Affiliate marketing is a good opportunity for a home based business for women. With a little bit of time and effort women are staying at home and running their own home based business.

3. Regular Income Stream - Don’t just have all large projects. Set up a few (or several, depending upon your budget needs) smaller, regular income-producing projects to generate weekly / monthly income. And maintain a steady flow as much as possible. In other words, if five regular, smaller jobs pay the day-to-day bills, once one of them quits or runs out of work for you, replace it as soon as possible so that you maintain your steady ‘five’ as much as possible.

Some people setup affiliate programs in this manner; selling something for someone else and earning a percentage or profit for selling. They target so much income from one source of revenue stream to cover a certain portion of expenses. And if this runs out of steam, they beef up promotions or switch to another affiliate program. Tax-free income in 'munis'

Spring has sprung, and so has the tax season. Wouldn't it be nice NOT to have a tax bill due this month?

If you'd like to earn some tax-free income, consider investing in "munis," or municipal bonds as they are more formally known. The bond issuer borrows the money from you the investor and issues a bond, or a promise, to pay you back your principal plus interest.

While municipal bonds are issued by cities, they also may be issued by counties, states, school districts, airports, hospitals or any other entity funded by local tax dollars.

Munis offer interest rates that are usually lower than the rates you could earn from other fixed-income investments, such as certificates of deposit or corporate bonds.

So why would you want to invest in a muni bond that pays a lower interest rate? The income is tax-free, and the interest you earn from the bank isn't.

To see if it is smarter to invest in a tax-free muni or invest in something that is taxable, you need to do a little math.

The higher your tax bracket, the better it may be to invest in the muni. Let's say the city of Taxville offers to pay 4 percent interest tax-free. XYZ Corp., though, offers 6 percent interest, with the tax bite.

You want to invest $10,000. Which option is better?

You will earn $400 from the city of Taxville. All of it goes into your pocket.

You will earn $600 from XYZ, but if you are in the highest federal and state tax bracket, you will pay about $250 in taxes, leaving only $350 after taxes.

Generally, the interest income you earn from municipal bonds is free from federal taxes. If you are a California resident and choose to invest in a bond issued by the state or any other government entity within state borders, then the interest income is also going to be free from California taxes, in almost all cases.

Not all cities, counties or states are equal when it comes to risk. Just like you and me, they have credit scores, known as credit ratings. The three big rating firms are Standard and Poor's, Moody's and Fitch.

The best rating is AAA. It is followed by AA, then A and finally BBB. Anything below BBB is a junk bond. The higher the credit rating, the lower the risk of default. The lower the credit rating, the higher the interest will be to attract investors.

You must decide whether you want to earn more by taking greater risk or settle for a lower return but greater security.

Finally, when we talk about tax-free income, we are talking about the interest you earn -- not any gains made by selling your bond at a profit. If you bought a municipal bond for $1,000 and before it matures, you are able to sell it for $1,200, you will have a taxable capital gain.

As attractive as it may sound to have all of your income tax-free, municipal bonds should be considered only as part of a diversified portfolio and only if your tax bracket is high enough to make it a benefit. Then next April, you can smile about the income that goes 100 percent to you.

Vonage Affiliate Program Disconnected?

Vonage can no longer sign up new customers. A U.S. district court judge has barred the VoIP provider after they lost a patent infringement lawsuit to Verizon.

According to InfoWorld, “Judge Claude Hilton of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia denied Vonage’s request to stay an injunction pending its appeal of a patent infringement ruling. On March 8, a federal jury found that Vonage infringed on three Verizon patents and must pay $58 million in damages plus royalties.”

The Vonage site still touts their affiliate program, where you can make money referring new customers to Vonage…

And the both of you can receive additional income from this type of endeavor. But there is one thing you must always keep in mine; making money on the Internet takes time and work, and if you stay with your plan, you will reach your goal.

There will be an auction of affiliate domain names at the Casino Affiliate Convention, held in Amsterdam on May 3 – 5.

Following The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) in 2006, many affiliates suddenly lost their income. PartyPoker, which had an enormous affiliate scheme, pulled out of the US market with almost no warning.

Effectively, the act meant that the online poker industry lost nearly 23 million players. Those affiliates serving only PartyPoker or without international market share, went from boom to bust almost overnight.

However, despite the loss of the US market, the online poker and online casino world market is expected to reach $12 Billion next year. Domain names from the once thriving businesses in the US will go on sale at the NH Grand Krasnapolsky Hotel in Amsterdam.

The sites have some value to the international online casino market, and their overall value could increase should the UIGEA be repealed or softened.

The industry is lobbying hard for change, and their chances were recently increased when the World Trade Organization ruled in favour of Antigua & Barbuda in its dispute with the US. This ruling states that the UIGEA and other US anti-gambling laws violate the General Agreement in Trade in Services (GATS), or freedom of trade.

There is so much information on the Internet regarding making money it is hard to know what is truth and what is hype. No one really wants to be scammed and it’s unfortunate that many are. Everyone seems to title their money making success as “secrets”. So unsuspecting people in search of ways of making money purchase e-books and/or programs to reveal the ’secrets’. It’s unfortunate that most people don’t realize most of the secrets are reveal for free online on a daily basis. So, what is the real secret to making money online?

Over the last few years I have been searching for real money making opportunities online. I have found a number of website, viewed a number of e-book pages, visited forums and blogs that deal with this subject. One good thing about about being on a tight budget is that I never had enough money to buy anything so I never was able to be scammed out of money. This also allowed me to find the information I needed from reliable sources rather than people trying to take my money.

There are secrets to making money online but they may not be what you would expect. This is not to say that many e-books out there aren’t valuable and have information that will help you make money online. But for most of these so called secrets you can find the information on your own if you search for it. If you don’t get caught up in the ‘get rich quick’ schemes and search reliable sources than all the so called ’secrets’ are easy to find.

At this point you are probably wondering why you should take advice from who is not making a ’six figure’ income online? This is true, I have only made a few thousand dollars online over a one year period. I am not claiming to be a pro but I do know the basics of making money online. I do know the things that will waste time and the things that will grow over time.

Here are some of the secrets I have found from various off line as well as online free resources:

1. Making money online or off as more to do with determination, perseverance and ’smarts’ than what you are using to make money with. Determination and perseverance is a key to success in any area of your life including making money. This also requires time. Don’t expect to make money without working at it. Even the get rich quick scammers had to put time into planning the scam, right? What do I mean by ’smarts’? By this I mean you have to use common sense and educate yourself before venturing into things that may cost you time and money.

2. You can easily make money online. It’s not hard to make money online if you don’t care how much you make. This may not exactly be a secret but many sites will offer information on making money online but not all are worth trying. There are many sites online paying people every day for various things. You can make money reading emails, writing for community blogs, through survey sites, etc. You can earn a few bucks here and if that is your goal then great. But if your goals is to actually make an income that will help your family then stay away from:

Writing for Revenue Sharing Community Blogs (I have good reason for this, I will explain on a later date)

If you realize your time is worth more than you will seek ’smarter’ ways to make money online. With the exception of the writing for revenue sharing blogs, these money making opportunities won’t grow over time. As a mom of three kids I have decided my time is precious to my family and I am not going to waste my time with things that will make me very little money with the time invested and that won’t grow over time.

4. High traffic and good content are key to making large amounts of money with your website or blog. You could have the best information available or the best affiliate to promote but if you no one see it then it doesn’t help you make money. Getting traffic to your site can be done a few different ways but if you want to be successful with making money through a website you need to have people seeing it.

5. Paid to blog reviews and advertisements. This is a fairly new income stream for bloggers so that is why it’s somewhat of a ’secret’ to many. Companies like PayPerPost, Blogitive, Review Me, SponsoredReviews and others are paying bloggers to blog about various products and services. The better traffic, content and rankings the more you get paid more. Some bloggers are making $500 -$1000 for just one post. Good content is very important to getting a good pagerank and traffic. It is also important to have good balance between paid and non-paid post. WP BankRoll is another excellent tool that has been release recently that allows bloggers to work directly with advertisers.

6. Affiliate Marketing is an excellent way to make money online. But, there are a few things you need to know about how to best do this. Affiliate Marketing is one of the best ways to make money because you are selling products and services from well know companies that people already trust and shop from. There is a lot to be said about affiliate market so I will have to get more in detail at a later time. But just remember you shouldn’t have to pay to become an affiliate for any company.

7. Adsense can make you good money if you have high traffic, high paying keywords and have good content with a good balance of Adsense placement. I think the first thing most of us think as we enter the world of web/blog building is that if we just put Adsense ads on our blog or site and start writing then we will make money. The truth is unless you have high traffic with higher paying keywords then you are not likely to make much at all. It’s not to say you shouldn’t try Adsense but just understand it’s not as easy as you may think. There are some sites that offer lists of high paying Adsense keywords. The best way to use Adsense is to view it as one of a few ways to make money with your site.

What Is Affiliate Marketing And How Can It Help Me Achieve More Sales For My Website?

No doubt you have been searching for something on the internet and your first port of call is a search engine, for instance Google, Yahoo, MSN and the like. You type in a couple of words to search and on the first page of your search you click on the first link and are taken to a website. The website displays an advertising banner on the right of the screen, you click on the banner and are taken to another website. On this second website you then make a purchase for an item you have initially been searching for.

Congratulations, you just made that first and second website some money through affiliate marketing. Confused? So was I.

First let’s discuss the general two options of affiliate marketing and show the benefits of both.

First option – The Affiliate

To become an affiliate you need a couple of things. Usually this will be a website of you own. Let’s say you promote an information site about Extreme Sports and has a few hundred visitors a month. Your site covers aspects of the different sports and contains a couple of articles people can read that you constantly update with new info and another page with some links to specific sports sites.

You join an Affiliate promotions site and find a website that sells extreme sports holidays. You apply to become an affiliate of the extreme sports holiday with a ten percent commission on sales and are provided an advertisers banner (advertising picture with a website link) to promote on your website. This can be anywhere on your website and on each page if you have more than one page. Each time someone visits your website, clicks on the extreme sports holiday promotions banner and purchases a holiday, you get ten percent commission. You check your affiliate commissions after several weeks and are pleasantly pleased to discover you have made quite a nice amount of money coming in on a monthly basis.

Second Option – The Advertiser

You have been both working on your website for quite some time and are relatively happy with the amount of traffic it is receiving. You sell quite a few niche products on your site, but the income is not quite where you want it. You join an Affiliate site, but this time as an advertiser, not an affiliate. You have several banners created for potential affiliates to obtain. You offer 25% commission on each sale an affiliate generates. After several weeks you find that you now have 25 webmasters obtaining your banners. That’s 25 other websites that are advertising YOUR website for potential sales. If these newly obtained affiliates potentially generate 2 new sales per website per week and this is on top of your usual website traffic, you see the marketing power it generates. How many websites would potentially become affiliates of your website after a year……?

As you can gather being an Affiliate can attract more potential web traffic to your site as well as generate an additional income.

Being an Advertiser can increase sales for a business (or any other with product sales) website with the potential to have your website be advertised on 10’s, 100’s, possibly 1000’s of other websites.

Lake Forest, CA (PRWeb) March 24, 2007 -- Online pay-per-click advertising has made major strides in the advertising industry in the past few years. Online giant Google topped $10 billion in revenues in 2006. Much of that revenue is from Google's pay-per-click advertising service, which charges advertisers for each click on an ad, whether or not the customer buys anything. After having testing various forms of pay-per-action ads since June, Google announced this week a limited beta test of pay-per-action advertising, pitting the company squarely against affiliate programs.

Affiliate programs charge the advertiser only when a customer makes an actual purchase, reducing waste and giving the advertiser a more exact and accurate accounting of the advertising cost for the sales revenue that it generates. The advertiser can choose how much it offers to pay the websites that carry its banner ads.

One company that utilizes such marketing is Fontaine Faucets, a top seller of faucets, sinks and bathroom accessories on eBay and Overstock.com. Fontaine pays 15% to its affiliates, which adds up to an average of more than $25 per sale.

That's not a bad profit for the affiliate, especially since it is passive income. Once the banner ad is placed, the website owner can just relax, and, when a website visitor clicks the banner and makes a purchase, the website owner can expect to receive a check in the mail.

Marketing Specialist Corey Chambers joined the staff of Fontaine Faucets one year ago to share some of his affiliate marketing experience with the successful new faucet company. Fontaine attracted 120 affiliates in the first 6 months after launching its affiliate program last year. Chambers expects thousands of affiliate websites to sign up with Fontaine within the next year after the launch of a new affiliate recruitment campaign in April.

For the millions of Americans who have created websites and personal pages such as MySpace, banner ads can be the easiest way to profit from their work. "I was very surprised when my own personal MySpace account got an affiliate sale from the Fontaine affiliate banner that I posted there," exclaims Corey Chambers, "I never promoted the page at all… I thought nobody would ever see it."

Affiliate banners can also be placed in emails. Chambers cautions against sending unsolicited emails to strangers though; this violates affiliate program rules, and your email account could be terminated for sending spam. Simply sign up for the affiliate program, insert the banner into your web page and email signature, then relax and wait for the checks to appear in your mail box.

Many serious affiliate advertising entrepreneurs make millions by signing up for several affiliate programs, inserting the ads near related content, or even using pay-per-click advertising of their own to bring in customers to make a purchase.

Is Network Marketing The Best Way To Earn Money Working At Home

People are often looking for the best way, or the easiest way to earn money working at home. There are many different options to choose from, so how do you sort out and find the home business model that returns the quickest results, especially if you are new to the online world.

In my experience, I have found that network marketing is a perfect fit for me, and a great way to earn money working at home.

So what is Network Marketing? With this business model, the "Company" has agents or affiliates that sell the company's products in return for a fee or commission. Usually the affiliate pays a monthly membership fee which covers training, support, a website, hosting and other benefits. But this is where it gets interesting.

The affiliate is then able to refer other affiliates and earn a monthly bonus from the referred people. Not only that, but any sales made by the referred affiliate (sales could be products or more referred affiliates) results in extra commissions for you. This can go multiple levels deep.

Obviously, the big advantage with this model is that you earn money from your product sales, your team's product sales, and monthly bonuses from your direct enrolees and their enrolees, several levels deep.

You can make residual, leveraged income from referring one person, but the more affiliates you refer, the more money you will earn working at home, in the long term.

You have two choices for promoting your Network Marketing business (yes, it is actually a business). You can promote it offline with flyers, newspaper ads, or meeting and talking to prospects. Or you can do all your marketing online, from the comfort of your own home.

Talking to prospects offline can be very time consuming, so you should qualify prospects up-front with questions designed to check their interest and suitability. You need to spend most of your time with people who are targeted and have a real interest in what you have to offer.

Me personally, I prefer to market my business online. Your reach is far greater with this method for a lot less work. You can ATTRACT targeted prospects and spend your time on people who are interested. Most Network Marketing companies give you a website to promote that has your links in it.

I always think that it's much better to have your own landing page with lead capture and autoresponder follow-up. You then have more chances to make the sale. Once you have people in your team, it's very important to follow-up and support these members to ensure that they get off to a fast start.

Once you have your systems in place, it's time to drive targeted traffic to your landing page. You can create a blog with a link to your site, add content, and each time you make a post, "ping" to alert the blog directories (I use Pingoat.com).

Also, write articles and submit to the article directories with a link pointing back to your site. Once you are generating an income, you can then invest in PPC (pay per click) advertising, for example, Google Adwords. But do your homework first if you are new to PPC, because it can be very costly if you don't know what you are doing.

Now, I'm not saying that Network Marketing is the ONLY way to earn money working at home, but it is one of the better ways to go if you operate it like a "real" business. This is especially true if you like the idea of earning residual income month after month.

The four investing categories

People frequently ask me about the basics of investing. For the pros, this might serve as just a reminder of the fundamentals. For beginners or those who don't feel comfortable with investing, let me start on the first rung of the ladder.

Investments can be broken down into some basic categories, each with its own primary purpose. People generally invest their dollars into four main categories: cash, stock, bonds and real estate

Of course, there are other categories such as oil and gas, commodities and collectibles (lottery tickets are not a category), but the majority of individual investment money is focused on the big four.

Cash is more than what you carry in your pocket or purse. It includes checking accounts, savings accounts, money-market accounts, anything that can be turned into cash fairly quickly.

Most bank products fit into this category, even certificates of deposit. While they have maturity dates, they can be turned into cash if the holder pays a nominal penalty.

The primary investment purpose of these instruments is to provide you with an income. In most cases, it is simply interest income. What it is NOT, is growth. The interest income from cash accounts can grow, but it is not really a "growth" investment.

Let's move to bonds. They come in a variety of packages such as U.S. government bonds, corporate bonds and municipal bonds. No matter who issues them, they are similar. As with cash, this category is primarily designed to provide you with income, again usually interest income. Bonds are not growth investments.

Bond issuers promise to pay their investors a particular interest rate, and they have a maturity date that indicates when the principal will be repaid.

Stocks also come in a variety of shapes and styles but are primarily growth investments. You do not get an interest rate or a maturity date. You pick a company based on factors such as management, product, longevity and past performance.

If the stock is a winner, your investment return is going to be the gain on the price of the stock. For example, you buy it for $10 and sell it for $15, that growth is your profit. You may or may not be paid a dividend, or earnings distribution.

Finally, there is the real estate category. Everyone knows what it is, but the investment purpose of real estate is very much like stocks. Most of the money made in real estate is not the income but the growth in the value of it. And, as they say in this business, it's all about location, location, location.

Income is generally taxed at the ordinary income tax rates. Growth, if long term, is taxed at a lower capital gains rate.

When starting out, ask yourself: What is your primary purpose for the money you are about to invest? Do you want income or growth? The answer should lead you to invest in a category that is primarily aligned with your investment goal. Do not put all of your money in just one category. Instead, seek diversification and balance.

Two mistakes made by wannabe website publishers

So many people who want to be profitable website publishers often make the same two mistakes when they first start out.

The first major mistake is not trying to think up an original site idea. So many just clone existing sites they know to be popular, Sites that either copy MySpace or provide add-on services to MySpace subscribers for instance. The ability to think originally is what separates successful website publishers from the rest of the pack.

You can see a direct representation of this phenomenon by watching Website For Sale listings at popular webmaster forums. You will notice a distinct similarity between most of the listings because they were all made by people who were not thinking originally and have now decided to try to make some of their money back by selling because they’ve realized you need more than just a copied idea to make a website successful. One of the additional problems exacerbating this issue I think is that most wannabe website publishers come from the same background and have the same interests and unfortunately are too young or too inexperienced in life to have developed interests beyond what is the norm for their demographic.

There are original ideas out there though, you just have to think of them.

The second major mistake new website publishers make is failing to wait before trying to cash in. Admittedly when you’re new you might need the money, but usually the longer you can wait to worry about money & monetization the easier it will be to build traffic. How often do we see people seeking monetization advice on a website with 1000 uniques a month or less? There is no reason to worry about income with so little traffic. At that point in your site’s development you should be focusing on expansion of content and promotion, not monetization. Focusing too much on money too early can hamper your promotional efforts (some places will not like to overtly commercialized sites) as well it occupies your time which would be better spent on increasing traffic.

If you have a unique website you are almost guaranteed to be successful if you give it enough time and don’t hinder your own progress by focusing on the wrong thing. The only times when success wouldn’t be guaranteed for a unique website is if your niche is too small to ever provide the traffic you need even if everyone in your niche visited your website (such as knitting advice for blind eskimos).

If you can make a site and work on it in your spare time for a year or two, focusing more on content and features and promotion rather than monetization, then it will eventually pay off, but you have to start with a unique idea or niche.

To provide examples, I wish to mention three sites, one owned by myself, two owned by forum members.

My site is Universal Wedding Registry. I started this site quite a few years ago but never finished building it, I finally paid to have it finished (redone really) recently and have now just barely started to promote it. How it works is it provides an easy to use interface for people to create a wedding registry compiled of items from any merchant or store, as opposed to single store registries found most everywhere else. Through affiliate datafeeds and other affiliate programs I can sometimes earn a commission on sales through the site in a way that is completely unobtrusive to users (paid links are not treated any differently than unpaid links and the users add & control both types). So I do have a system in place for monetization, but it was intrinsic to the programming of the site to include it and I don’t actively push it on visitors. I’m also not concerned that it doesn’t make me much yet. Finally, it has a built in viral promotion system because every user is going to have to tell every guest at their wedding or reception about it.

Another site is One Billion Bulbs. This site provides a free and easy way to track energy savings by using compact fluorescent bulbs instead of standard incandescent ones. The site taps into some social media mojo by allowing people to form groups, and it appeals to our competitive spirits by ranking these groups, as well as ranking states & countries. The site isn’t monetized yet but it wouldn’t be hard to imagine it ending up being exclusively sponsored by a home store chain like Home Depot, or a light bulb company like Sylvania, perhaps in the form of a printable coupon or manufacturer’s rebate. In the end this site could make the owner a tidy sum with what amounts to unobtrusive advertising that visitors will actually really like (assuming it is a coupon or rebate).

The third site is Plastic Economy. This site provides an easy and free way for users to track credit card debt and helps users make decisions on which cards to pay down first. Since launch this site has generated substantial traffic in a short period of time thanks to some media mentions. Everyone should know how much money they owe, and they should know what their interest rate is, but some people (perhaps the same people with so little financial sense that they end up tens of thousands of dollars in debt) have a hard time dealing with and understanding these numbers and figures unless it is laid out for them in a very easy to understand way. So the site isn’t for everyone, but those it is for seem to like it. This site was also not monetized when first launch and only recently added ads (I’m assuming because traffic has reached high levels now). It isn’t hard to imagine how much ads so nicely targeted can make.

So, what is similar about those three sites? Well, they’re all set-it-and-forget-it type sites where they do not require constant updating or other maintenance, so they’re completely passive income streams. They’re all service-type content sites that rely on clever programming to make life easier rather than textual content to draw in visitors. They also are all fairly unique, and for the most part unmonetized (or at least, not at first).

So if you’re trying to get into website publishing, try to emulate these sites (and no, I don’t mean register SuperWeddingRegistry.com, OneTrillionBulbs.com, and NylonEconomy.com) by thinking up a unique service idea that could be accomplished by a website. Or, take a standard website model such as an article/forum/blog site and apply it to an underserved unique niche. The point being, the more unique your website, the higher likelihood that you will be successful. Then, once you have your site made, don’t stress out about monetizing it right away, wait until you have significant traffic.

Google Adsense program is a popular web advertising program which provides a good income source for many websites. There are well defined terms of service to strictly adhere to when participating in the program.
On my visit through sites and forums, I daily notice several instances of misuse of Adsense ads. So here a few helpful Google Adsense tips, probably many you already know, and few you might gain by knowing now. These adsense faq are all picked from the Program Policies, Terms and Conditions and FAQ itself and presented in a simplified manner.

1. Never click your own adsense ads or get them clicked for whatever reason. You know this one very well. This is a surefire way to close you Adsense account. Never tell your office associates or friends to click on them. Keep a check if your family or children are busy increasing your income by clicking your ads and indirectly trying to stop your income. Dont even think of offering incentives for clicks, using automated clicking tools, or other deceptive software. Adsense is very smart to detect fraudulent clicks. Check the ads which appear on your pages by the Google Preview tool if required.

2. Never change the Adsense code. There are enough means of adsense optimization and customizations available to change the colour, background or border to suit your needs. Do whatever you want to do outside the code, never fiddle within the ad or the search code. They know it when you do. The search code has more limitations to colour and placement, but you should adhere to the rules. The code may stop working and violates the TOS.

3. Do not place more than 3 ad unit and 1 ad links or 2 adsense search boxes on any web page. Anyway, ads will not appear in those units even if you place more ad units. But this is the limit they set, so it is better to stick to it.

4. Do not run competitive contextual text ad or search services on the same site which offer Google Adsense competition in their field. Never try to create link structures resembling the adsense ads. Never use other competitive search tools on the same pages which have Adsense powered Google search. They do allow affiliate or limited-text links. Update: Google has allowed you to run contextual advertising like Yahoo ads, Chitika etc provided the ads do not resemble Adsense ads.

5. Do not disclose confidential information about your account like the CTR, CPM and income derived via individual ad units or any other confidential information they may reveal to you. However, you may reveal the total money you make as per recent updates to the TOS.

6. Label headings as "sponsored links" or "advertisements" only. Other labels are not allowed. I have seen many sites label ads with other titles. Don not make your site a target in a few seconds gaze.

7. Never launch a New Page for clicked ads by default. Adsense ads should open on the same page. You may be using a base target tag to open all links in a new window or frame by default. Correct it now as they do not want new pages opening from clicked ads.

8. One Account suffices for Multiple websites. You do not need to create 5 accounts for 5 different websites. One account will do. If you live in the fear that if one account is closed down for violation of TOS, believe me they will close all accounts when they find out. You can keep track of clicks by using channels with real time statistics. They will automatically detect the new site and display relevant ads.

9. Place ads only on Content Pages. Advertisers pay only for content based ads. Content drives relevant ads. Although you might manage some clicks from error, login, registration, "thank you" or welcome pages, parking pages or pop ups, it will get you out of the program.

10. Do not mask ad elements. Alteration of colours and border is a facility to blend or contrast ads as per your site requirements. I have seen many sites where the url part is of the same colour as the background. While blending the ad with your site is a good idea, hiding relevant components of the ads is not allowed. Also do not block the visibility of ads by overlapping images, pop ups, tables etc.

11. Do not send your ads by email. Html formatted emails look good and allow placement of these javascript ads. But it is not allowed as per TOS. You do not want impressions registering on their logs from any email even once. They are watching!

12. Keep track of your content. So Adsense is not allowed on several non content pages. But it is also not allowed on several content pages too. Do not add it on web pages with MP3, Video, News Groups, and Image Results. Also exclude any pornographic, hate-related, violent, or illegal content.

13. Do not alter the results after ad clicks or searches - Ensure you are not in any way altering the site which the user reaches to after clicking the ads. Do not frame, minimize, remove, redirect or otherwise inhibit the full and complete display of any Advertiser Page or Search Results Page after the user clicks on any Ad or Search results.

14. Avoid excessive advertising and keyword stuffing - Although the definition of "excessive" is a gray area and is subject to discretion, yet Google adsense with correct placement, focused content and high traffic will get you much more income than other programs, so excessive advertising is not required. Keyword stuffing does target better focused ads, but overdoing it is not required.

15. Ensure you Language is Supported - Adsense supports "Chinese (simplified), Japanese, Danish, Korean, Dutch, Norwegian, English, Polish, Finnish, Portuguese, French, Russian, German, Spanish, Hungarian, Swedish, Italian and Turkish". In addition, AdSense for search is available in Czech, Slovak, and Traditional Chinese. If your web pages language is not supported, do not use the code on such pages.

16. Maximum 2 referral button per product per page - With the launch of the google adsense referral program, you are allowed to put only 2 referral buttons for adsense referral, adwords referral, Google pack and Firefox with google toolbar referral.

17. Do not specify Google ads as your alternate ads. - Several services like Chitika eminimalls allow you to place alternate urls, when a targeted paying ad cannot be displayed. This involved creating an simple html page and putting the ad to be displayed instead. Even Adsense allows an alternate url feature instead of displaying public service ads. But never use Adsense ads as alternate urls.
18. Do not confuse with adjacent images - It was a common policy to increase CTR by placing same number of images as the number of text ads, which falsely gave the impression that the text ads represented an explanation to these images. Inserting a small space or a line between the images and ads is not allowed. Make sure that the ads and images are not arranged in a way that could easily mislead or confuse your visitors. More.

However, the amount of money that AdSense can bring in is limited by how much advertisers are willing to pay to advertise in your particular blogging niche and also on how much search engine traffic your blog receives. If the topic of your blog is some type of popular product or service, you stand a good chance of doing well with AdSense. Also, those who find your blog while searching through Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc, tend to click ads far more frequently than regular readers.

So, what if your blog isn’t one of those that does well with AdSense? It’s time to get creative then. If you’ve heard much at all about internet marketing, you’ve probably heard the term affiliate before. You may have seen the strange little abbreviation (aff) after certain links, too. Affiliate marketing is an often overlooked way of making money on your blog.

Affiliate marketing is simply linking to a product or service with a special link that allows you to be paid when the visitor performs some sort of action after following that link. This means that you can be paid a commission when someone makes a purchase based on your recommendation pointing them to a specific product. Sometimes all they have to do is sign up for free information and you can be paid for the lead (i.e. name, email address, etc).

The money that can be earned with affiliate marketing is often much more than a few clicks on contextual advertising can bring in. Some companies can pay upwards of $100 for a sale while others pay $.50 to a couple of dollars or more for leads. There is great potential for earning extra money when this is done right.

In order to do this right, though, make sure you don’t fall into the trap of marketing things on your blog that you wouldn’t buy yourself or recommend to your friends and family. Remember, your blog is only as good as your own credibility. If you are pushing something that you don’t believe in, it will show and you will lose readers as a result of it. Be very careful about your recommendations.

Now you’re wondering where to go to sign up for this right? Many companies offer affiliate sales programs directly, but it may be easier for you to sign up with an affiliate marketing network such as LinkShare.com (aff), Commission Junction, ModernClick, or ClickBank. Each of these works a little differently, but they all have many different companies to choose from and you’re likely to find something on one of these sites that you will feel comfortable with marketing on your blog. Don’t forget other online retailers like Amazon.com, either. They don’t just sell books and cd’s, but also computers, mp3 players, and all kinds of other products.

It’s best not to try to shove your affiliate links down the throat of your visitors. Try including affiliate links when you’re reviewing a product or service. Give your honest opinion and remember to disclose that your link is an affiliate link. You can do this by just mentioning it in the post or by including the abbreviation I talked about above: (aff). This may be required by law in the United States.

You may not be able to quit your day job just by including affiliate links on your blog, but it’s definitely another good way of making a few extra dollars to help pay for hosting and all the hard work you put into your blog. Good luck!

AIG SunAmerica ( affiliate of AIG insurance) did a survey of retirees and they basically came up with four categories:

The Ageless Explorers- an average (post retirement) household income of $64,800 ( 45,000 is the national average) and average net worth of $469,800. 75% have an investment strategy and wide range of investments. 60% received assistance in developing an investment plan.

The Comfortably Contents- an average income $61,200 a net worth of $367,500. 68% have an investment strategy and other investments. 49% receive assistance in developing an investment plan.

The Live For Todays- an average income of $46,300 an net worth $222,600. 51% have a investment strategy and other investments. 38% received assistance in developing an investment plan.

The Sick and Tireds- an average income of $31,900 and average net worth $161,200. 27% have an investment strategy and other investments. 22% received assistance in developing an investment plan.

The survey goes on to say, Most with above average net worth had long term care insurance and so forth.

I know that every individual circumstance is different. That is the problem with personal finance that I have. Sometimes a smaller net worth does not necessarily mean that you are struggling. I also feel some retirees care less about money as long as their are taken care of. (i.e health insurance, and a comfortable place to stay). Most retirees are not checking their bank statements every month.

I know some retirees that are staying with their sons or daughters and have no reason to even spend their social security checks. I know others that move to Palm Springs, bought a condo cash, playing golf everyday or taking cruises.

My point is that according to the survey, most people that plan or have the most investments elsewhere seem to finish above the race. It all depends on our lifestyles. I hope to be an Ageless Explorer and have passive income on top of my IRA and 401k. Simply because I love to travel and have an active life. Some people hate to travel, fish, play golf etc. Therefore, they have no reason to constantly save or have other investments.

As an entrepreneur and a blogger I’ve been afforded a unique outlook on the whole blogging as a business discussion. I doubt there are many other bloggers out there who think and act as I do in this regard, which is why I enjoy writing about blogging as a business model so much - it’s not territory many people cover since they just don’t think about it.

How To Leverage The Talent Of Others To Help Grow Your Blog

Attracting new writers to your blog is a difficult process and there are many variables to consider. Your goal is to sustain the value your blog offers, or ideally, increase the value it offers to your readers. As most bloggers know, value comes from content, and content comes from the minds of people, so your first goal when outsourcing the writing of your blog is to find the right people.

It’s pretty clear that the best blogs have talented people writing them. While talent alone isn’t enough, it’s important to focus on attracting, then filtering and finally retaining talented individuals as the key outcome of your outsourcing efforts. Even if a blogger can’t commit to as many articles as you would like them to write, having one great blogger send in one article a month will do more for your traffic and blog growth than a mediocre blogger writing once a week.

Finding talent is not a process that can be done quickly and you won’t really know if a new writer you bring to your blog works well until they have published to your blog for a period of time. Watching how the blogosphere reacts to your hired bloggers is a good way to determine if you have added a good person to your team. Look for comments, trackbacks and incoming links generated by your bloggers as key metrics to assess their performance.

When Is The Right Time To Hire Bloggers?
This is a tough question to answer. You have two variables to consider -

1. You

How much writing do you intend to do yourself and what role do you want to play at your blog(s).

2. The current status of your blog

How much traffic you have, how entrenched is your personality with the current readership, what can your blog and you offer to incentivise contributions.

The first part I can’t really help with since you know what volume of work you want to contribute to your blog and what role you want to play. You may have an end goal of stopping writing altogether and acting as the manager of a team of writers. Or you may want to continue writing to your blog but want to bring on additional bloggers to increase traffic, or start a new blog or even a blog network.

The current status of your blog is a crucial element because it determines what leverage points you have to offer people you hire. If you have a hugely popular blog then many people will consider it a privilege to write for your blog and will likely give their best work because they know how much they gain from the exposure your blog provides.

The less traffic you have the harder it is to attract writers without offering some form of payment. If you plan to outsource from the start, with no traffic or brand in the blogosphere, you will either have to offer partnership or pay money. Other options include a contra deal where you trade products or services you provide in exchange for blogging, for example consulting, or web design/hosting, or SEO work in exchange for writing.

Given all these conditions you can decide when or why you think outsourcing your blog writing is something you want to do. The position you are in now dictates what options you have and what resources you can leverage.

How To Get People To Write For No Money
If you were to ask me how you can get a person to write for “free” I would suggest focusing on building one great blog. If that means working on it yourself for the short term future then so be it, you have to start somewhere. Make one great blog, grow the traffic and brand into something well known and liked within your niche and then you have something you can leverage.

Like my story with Small Business Branding you don’t necessarily have to build the blog from scratch yourself - you can go out and buy a blog that’s already established. With an asset available you can offer exposure and traffic to your potential recruits in exchange for content.

Another alternative is to bring on a partner or several partners. The down side with this method is you share ownership of your asset with someone, the upside is they may be as motivated as you are to see your blog succeed.

You could consider offering a future payment option. Make a pledge to pay a set amount in a set time period regardless of the performance of the blog, provided they agree to contribute a certain amount of writing. This systems lets you “put off” paying your blogger until your blog is producing revenue, and is also secure for your writers since they are guaranteed a certain amount of money even if the blog doesn’t take off. It’s a gamble, but it might help you get started.

No matter what the option you choose, there really isn’t any way to hire a blogger for free, you always offer something of value in exchange for their work, it just doesn’t necessarily have to be cash or paid immediately. Even if you had your girlfriend or husband or other family member blog for you for nothing, they do it because they love you and enjoy the chance to demonstrate this, they feel good inside about it, or another way to look at it - they might do it to avoid feeling guilty for shunning a self-imposed obligation. There is always a self-serving motivation behind every action, even when actions appear on the surface to be 100% selfless.

What About Paying Bloggers Money? - How Much Should You Offer?
If you have cash to spare (err…invest) then paying for blog content is a great way to motivate people. If you are serious about building a blog network then you better be serious about rewarding your writers very well.

The payment structures for paid blogging is an area where the market is constantly in flux. It’s such a new job that there is no standard as yet, but for the sake of helping you decide what to pay I offer a few examples I’ve either implemented myself or seen other blog networks use. Bear in mind that ultimately you pay what it takes and you can only find that out by making an offer.

Generally most agreements are based on posts (articles published), either paying per post, or paying a set amount each month or week in exchange for a set amount of posts. Other aspects of the agreement might include having your paid bloggers interact with the community via comments and performing additional marketing or blog management tasks.

Testing For Traction
I can’t remember which network it was - not one of the big ones - that paid $5 per post to bloggers with a minimum of 60 posts per month, so bloggers had to commit to an average of two per day. Note that posts don’t need to be fully fledged articles, news bites of a few hundred words count as a post too.

This particular network spent $300 a month minimum on each blogger resulting in a lot of posts in a short period of time. If after three months it is clear the blog is not taking off even with that much regular content, then the blog is sold off. If the growth curve is good, then the network renegotiates a new contract with the blogger based on a revenue share for moneys above the $300 a month minimum, for when the site starts making good money.

This method requires a significant investment upfront for each blogger, but you guarantee that you fully test the niche. I’d recommend focusing on only a few blogs to start with so you can see the results of two posts per day for yourself. This method is possibly one of the best ways to seriously start a blog network, but it might be too much money for some of you reading this.

Monthly Wage
A few years ago, the original blog network, Weblogs, Inc, had a blogger contract leaked to the web, so we all got to see how their system worked. While not every blogger had the same agreement, it was possible to garner a general impression of how the most successful blog network hired bloggers.

The agreement was for $500 a month in exchange for writing 125 posts, interacting in comments and deleting spam. I later read that not every blogger was paid the same, but this pricing point certainly felt like a “general standard”.

This is a solid payment structure and for many of the hired bloggers was a nice additional source of income - a part time job. Some people made a go of freelance blogging, combining the income of several blogging gigs to equal a full time wage. Weblogs Inc was one of the first networks to offer stable pay for hired bloggers and could be held responsible for creating a new job type - freelance blogger.

The Revenue Split
Sharing revenues with bloggers is a great way to stimulate motivation and empower your bloggers with control over their income. Of course if their income grows, yours does too.

B5media piloted a system where they paid their bloggers 100% of the revenue up to the first $100 and then a 60/40 split (the blogger received the 40% I believe) of any moneys over $100. They have since adapted a new method with a different payment structure.

I like the split payment option because it means your outsourcers are paid in proportion to the work they put in and are rewarded well for hard work. It’s important to offer a basic minimum retainer so they know they have a guaranteed income, and it should quickly become clear which bloggers are working hard and motivated and who you might have to let go.

Pay Per Post
You can keep things very simple and offer a set dollar amount for each post a person makes with no limitations on how many posts they make. This is a very ambiguous payment method and I don’t recommend it. It’s important to have set boundaries and expectations otherwise your bloggers may lack motivation or simply slack off.

Where To Find Bloggers?
Performancing.com until recently had an exchange area of their site including a blogger job board. It was launched shortly before the Problogger.net Job Board. Performancing was free and Problogger costs $50 per advertisement. Unfortunately performancing recently went through a rough period of changing owners and I’m not sure what happened to their job board. Since then the Problogger Job Board has become the standard.

Jon Symons from the HomeTurfMedia blog network told me that each ad he places at the Problogger Job Board is bombarded with applicants and he has no trouble finding bloggers willing to write.

Headhunting
Another method if you have more time and patience is to search the blogosphere for good bloggers in the niches you want to target. Once you find someone who’s work you like, email them and propose a job writing for your blog. Using this method you can view a person’s “portfolio” as a means to assess their talents before approaching them.

I like this method best, but it does take the most work and you must be prepared to face a lot of “no thanks” since many writers will be happy with their current blogging gigs.

Know Your Reason For Outsourcing
Before you go down the path of bringing on people to write for your blogs make sure you know why you are doing it. If you have a business goal in mind, then make sure you track your metrics. Know how much a blog earns for you at certain traffic benchmarks so you know how much you can budget to pay bloggers.

As a rough guide, if you are good at blog monetization, generally each unique visitor you have to your blog should be worth about $1. So if you can get to 1000 daily unique visitors then you should be able to earn $1000 per month from your blog. That is a VERY rough guide, but I have found it to be true in general.

The rule tends to apply only when your blog starts to surpass the triple figures mark in daily traffic and becomes more consistent once you get past the four figure daily traffic milestone. It’s not set in stone either - you can make even better returns depending on the audience you are tapping into - as much as $5 per unique visitor is not that unheard of.

Once you know your revenues and costs, you can start to look at things like the ratio between how many posts are made each day compared to your traffic growth rate. If two new posts per day sees you bring in an extra 2% in traffic each day, then you can start to play with your numbers.

The relationship between content production, traffic and income are the core drivers of a successful blog, so if you intend to take your blogging business serious you need to know your numbers, at least to a basic understanding.

There seems to be something about eBay, auctions and online advertising nowadays.

First, I wrote about BidVertiser offering eBay Ads. Then, today, I received an email from TextLinkAds* alerting me to this ad programme called AuctionAds*.

What is it? Well, it’s basically an ad programme that lets you run ads of eBay auction listings. You can put in keywords to run the types of auction ads that you want. You put in the code on your blog or site. And, you can earn money from these auction ad links if a user clicks on a link and take action on eBay.

Auction Ads even recently introduced the URL converter where you can turn any eBay link to an affiliate link. So, if you’re talking about anything on eBay (a search term, a funny or weird auction, something you wish to buy, etc.), you can turn them in to affiliate links. I tried to use this by making an example converted link in my blog post about Stella McCartney.

You can run Auction Ads with contextual ads like Google AdSense. And, they have several familiar ad formats.

The payment threshold is US$10 and it’s payable via PayPal every first of the month.

Picture someone passing a high tech advertising hoarding and noticing that it shows Palm fringed beaches in a Pacific paradise and then when a second person goes by and the hoarding changes to show a childrens’ party and finally a third person walks by and the hoarding shows a picture of President Hilary Clinton going into the Oval Office!

What the fictional high tech advertising hoarding above was doing was showing advertisements relevant to what the passing individual was thinking about. And of course all that was science fiction. But advertising relevant to what the shopper is thinking of and searching for is already here. It is called “Contextual Advertising”. And it is so remarkable that I indulged in a little “science fiction” above, to bring it to your attention.

Google Adsense is the most well known of the many Contextual Advertising Systems. And the one most targeted over the last year by marketers claiming to show us all how to make a fortune just by pasting a little snippet of JavaScript on our website.

Thousands of Internet Newbies have bought such nonsense. Just as a surefire way of making money during the Gold Rush was to sell picks and shovels, a surefire way of making money nowadays is to market “Adsense Nonsense”.

Contextual Advertising works very well for advertisers since it matches the information on the page and may lead to exactly what the shopper or surfer was looking for; it works for publishers and webmasters since it can serve webpages devoted to virtually any subject. And the shopper frequently gets exactly what they were looking for.

But the Internet newbie who thought that putting Adsense on their blog or website was going to lead to a high income is usually disappointed as months go by and single figure earnings stubbornly persist.

Lawsuit seeks to block Icahn's Lear buy

A Lear Corp. employee lawsuit seeks to block U.S. investor Carl Icahn from buying the auto-seating maker, saying he undervalues the company.

The lawsuit, which seeks class-action status, also argues the deal would violate the Employee Retirement Income Security Act since it would have Lear's salaried and hourly retirement savings plans sell shares of company stock to Icahn's affiliate, The Detroit News reported.

ERISA prohibits "any transaction involving the sale or exchange of plan assets between a plan and a party in interest," the lawsuit states.

Lear of Southfield, Mich., agreed last month to be acquired by Icahn affiliate American Real Estate Partners LP for $36 a share, but created a 45-day period to accept competing offers.

The proposed acquisition involves about $2.31 billion in cash to buy the shares Icahn does not already own and $2.5 billion in debt assumption.

A Lear spokesman declined to comment on the lawsuit's accusations.

A Delaware judge said Feb. 28 he would wait until the 45-day period ends before hearing a separate shareholder challenge to Icahn's offer. Major shareholder Pzena Investment Management called Icahn's offer "ridiculously low."

5 reasons why I blog

There is not only one chain letter going round the internet. There are thousands or even millions of them.

Most of them are plain stupid and I don’t even know, why some people still fall for the Nigerian Money Digger Mafia, the Penis ‘Extensionists’, Lottery Agencies or lost daughters of Saddam Hussein or Thaksin Shinawatra who are trying to bring their fortune millions into safety - with your help of course, haha!

Some of those schemes are quite smart and in a subliminal way manage to touch someones pride, vanity or ego.

One of those is the blog meme “5 reasons why I blog”, which is around quite a while. As Justin Timberland currently squeaks with Scarlett Johansson - “What goes around comes around…” - some of those just don’t stop at your door step.

And here we are: I got tagged by Paul O’Flaherty already a while ago, but just found out now.

So what can I do?

Okay, long prelude, short fall-out. Here are my 5 reasons why I blog:

1. To keep my brain juices flowing

When you are laying the whole day on pristine beaches or just in your hang mat; things get slower and slower. Not only the pace of life, but your brain cells as well. The heat doesn’t help either. It feels like someone is pulling chewing gum out of your ear (big Hooba Booba chewing gum that is). Just to make a decision if to drink another beer or better not move at all, because it’s sooooo hot - can be a half-day long task.

3. Laziness

Over your lifetime you’ll meet a lot of interesting people. The only problem is - not all in one location. After a while all of them are scattered around the planet, so it’s quite hard to keep and catch up with them. So when family, relatives and friends ask what am I doing the whole day and if I can send them some pictures and e-mails - I can now point to a simple internet address and say: “There! Just check it out”. Reduce and simplify? Not really. Am still on the phone every now and then and the e-mails didn’t get less. Simple case of self-delusion. Haha!

3. A social thing?

I worked in Sales before. So naturally I’m used to jabber the whole day; doesn’t matter if someone is listening or if I embarrass myself. You just can’t shut me up. And I still want to find out, if not really more of us are able to quit the rat race, even though there are excuses all along the way. So I want to show some temptations and ways on how to get there. Why can’t we learn together and find out about alternative modes of life? Nobody likes the cubicle, but for most of us it’s the future? Yeah right! I believe in shared knowledge as more useful, so if you have something to say and are interested on being a guest blogger, just let me know!

4. A geek thing?

I was always a bit of a geek. Started during the 80’s with my Atari 800XL, soon followed with experiences with KC 85/2 and 85/3, Schneider Armstrad 1512DD with Digital Research’s GEM up to my own first real PC 386DX25. Did mail boxing in my youth (that thing *before* the internet with modems and giant telephone bills!) and even took up a profession in the IT industries for 14 years. So naturally there was some interest in all kinds computer related. And here I am now, sitting on an island in Asia and experimenting with PHP, HTML, SEO, Widgets, Plugins, Google Analytics and Affiliate Programs. It’s a challenge, but an interesting one. So amazing what you can learn about web design in just a few months!

5. Show me the money!

Okay, I have to admit it, that’s a reason as well. Not only am I subscribing to the idea that it takes more than one sources of income, when you want to retire early. Rent, interest, dividends can be some pillars of your retirement. But I also wanted to find out, if it’s possible to make a living online. For sure there are plenty of options, like having an online shop selling things, offering consulting or programming services, teleworking, forex or stock trading. All too stressy for me to do that daily!

So far, things are going okay. Visitors, Ads and Affiliate numbers have doubled now almost every month over the last 6 months, so slowing things are improving. Google Page rank jumped from 2 to 5 and more traffic is coming in. It’s not enough to make a living yet; but I can cover my internet and hosting costs so far and buy a coffee or a pizza once in a while.

My niche is maybe too small; should I write a blog about Raunchy Sex, celebrities like Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, Brad Pitt or lifestyle items like Apple iPods??? But then - in Sex I prefer the real thing not theory. Why watch celebrities when you can live your own life? Person cult died with Mao - no? And lifestyle icons - that’s what I’m trying to get away from. Consumerism, Materialism - who needs that anyway? Happiness in Life is something else not money. There you go!

Can I go now, Paul?

I know: not before I shot the sheriff, eh I mean 5 other people. I really would love to know the reasons of the 5 people below. Let’s see how long it will take and if they even will subscribe to that Meme:

how the computer rose to prominence and took over every bit of our lives

When anthropologists of the future dig through our rubbish to find something that defines this time, I imagine they will be wading through mountains of computer bits and various other e-waste.

If they have the ability to get into our hard drives, they will know all our dirty secrets — when we were late for bills, who we dated and our various personal histories.

Because let’s face it, if one thing were to define this time in history, it would have to be how the computer rose to prominence and took over every bit of our lives.

OK, I know, saying that computers have taken over our lives sounds like an over the top plot of a Will Smith movie. But, it’s not so far from the truth.

Due to some fiscal irresponsibility, I recently got to test drive a day in the life without the internet. I sat down in my room, and thought it would be a great time to read a book, write on paper and embrace my inner renaissance woman.

I started writing and one of the words on the page didn’t look quite right. I spelled it perfectly, but was concerned that I didn’t have the meaning bang-on. (It’s a terrible pet peeve of mine to hear words used incorrectly due to an unfortunate year-long episode where one friend repeatedly referred to psychopaths as sycophants ... but I digress.)

So, I went to look up the word, and I realized that I no longer own a dictionary. It was one of the casualties of moving and six months ago when I was loading up boxes I decided to abandon the life-sized Oxford I have had since childhood — back then I thought, it’s all online now, so what’s the point?

Without a way to confirm my choice of vocabulary, I abandoned my pen and paper pursuits and called one of my friends. She lives fairly far away so most of our communications happen on MSN. And, I’ll be honest, sometimes I can barely remember the sound of her voice.

We talked awkwardly for a bit and then she decided it was time to grill me on my personal life. She told me that it was high time that I meet someone to spend the rest of my life with, and I should hit the internet. Horrified by the whole concept I ended our conversation, and then called more people to complain about what she had said.

Little did I know that everyone was onto this thing. One person I know has met her future husband online, another is embarking on a weird courtship with someone whose website profile intrigued her.

I was flabbergasted. On one level I don’t understand what would drive someone to advertise themselves. But, more importantly, I don’t understand how someone could embark on a dating adventure with someone they don’t know. However, it was explained to me as a more efficient way of sifting through the mire of the dating world.

Say you meet someone you like and then you get all caught up with hormones and infatuation only to realize that they hate puppies, and you love them. The deal is off, and heartbreak ensues.

With online dating you get to know these things before all the human stuff interferes.

It may not be working for me yet, but I am a fan of the human stuff.

There are people I know who don’t remember life before the Internet. But, I do. That’s not to say that I am not firmly entrenched in the computer age, but I have nostalgia for the days when my friends abroad would send me postcards not e-cards. And the fact that the sounds of my friends and family’s voices are starting to become less familiar scares the hell out of me.

On the flip side, I probably “talk” to them a lot more than I would if I were fully reliant on the phone or travel. And, although I like to receive letters, I was never much of a fan of writing them. So, there are balances.

However, the one month of financial stupidity that led me to the one day of technological withdrawal taught me a lot about who I am and who I want to be. Too much of the world I live in is Internet based and it’s time for some live interactions.
